Pornoscope (clip 1 min.) Pornoscope throws classic pornography into the digital blender: the well-endowed John Holmes and his large-breasted partner morph into pulsating, trance inducing geometric patterns. Holmes, although a tragic figure in American pornography, was synonymous with box office gold in the 1970s, performing in over 3,000 films in his career. However, Pornoscope’s polymorphous forms are universal, transforming gendered structures of porn and leveling essentialist theories of sexual power positioning. Frames contain multiple combinations of body parts, and the repetitions of star-like shapes are alien, anal, and/or or sexually/biologically indeterminate. The shifting, geometric shapes receive pleasure, moan and groan, and give pleasure back to the audience as a mesmerizing, abstract, psychedelic animation. The hypnotic kaleidoscope also alludes to the subconscious drives that make pornography a compulsory viewing experience, while the cosmic shape and colors reference 1970s fabrics, interior patterns and colors. Pornoscope is a play upon the structures and effects of pornography, catharsis, and of the visceral power of vision.
