Break-Up (clip 1:30 min.)

2007, black and white video with sound, 7:30 min.
Source: It Came From Outer Space (dir. Jack Arnold, 1953)

Break-Up is constructed from two layered, parallel scenes depicting the male protagonist’s search for his fiancé, or his futile pursuit of her femme fatale alien clone aka "the bad copy". The material aspects of the imperfect digital copy, digital artifacts manifesting due to poor compression/transmission, cause the film image (now digital video) to constantly "break-up" and then recompose. When characters are active, their cinematic image dissolve into pixels, deconstructing theories of identification and agency in classic narrative film.
