Blow-It-Up (clip 1 min.)

2007, color video with sound, 3-channel video, 6:00 min. loop
Source: Blowup (dir. Michelangelo Antonioni, 1966)

Numerous fans post or recreate mash-ups of their favorite movie scenes on YouTube. Similar to the hands of a DJ, I scrubbed and scratched the online player while playing a posting of The Yardbirds concert scene from Blowup. Recording my now VJ performance, I collected sequences of twittering, repetitive movements and electronic sounds. Each sequence was then looped to the point of excess to push the concept of what a loop is or can be. The new, interacting video loops are transformed into electronic instruments, with their own unique visual and sound, now in opposition to servicing the film’s content. The scene was also chosen because it is a metaphor for the film's thematic: the object out of context and societal rendering of meaning.
