"Gone" In 60 Seconds
|
“Gone In 60 Seconds” 2009, color video with sound, 1:00 min., (1:10 w/title) "Gone” in 60 Seconds is an absurdist remix of the epic, classic film Gone With the Wind, boiling the original 222 minute film down to 60 seconds. The re-edited version plays against an altered, sped-up stock MIDI track of the film’s signature song, Tara’s Theme. The project explores forms of digital compression, the status of cinema in digital times, and contemporary remix fan culture, as viewed on popular websites such as YouTube. The project also speaks to the remixing of high and low culture and appropriation as “stealing”, as referenced in the project’s title riffing off of the cheap-thrills, car-thief action flick, Gone in Sixty Seconds of 1974 and 2000. The project is also a Web 2.0 visual cultural response, or update, to the mechanisms of Douglas Gordon’s signature work, 24 Hour Psycho (1993).
